One Tillsonburg resident lost hundreds of dollars due to a new scam online after they added an unknown contact on Snapchat.
TILLSONBURG - One Tillsonburg resident fell victim to a new scam online.
Oxford County OPP say they added an unknown contact on Snapchat and then the unknown party sent a photo of a cheque made payable to the receiver, requesting them to deposit it through online banking.
An email address was provided to the person depositing the cheque, who was then requested to send a portion of the funds back to the sender via e-transfer.
The cheque was later found out to be counterfeit.
OPP say money transfer and cheque fraud scams are successful for fraudsters because they constantly find ways to put a new spin on an old scam.
Victims sometimes educate themselves on a particular type of money transfer or cheque fraud scam only to find out a new version of scam has been created. Typically, individuals use a phone or computer to talk with you before they offer money. Often this serves a dual purpose of providing criminals with access to your banking information and then for you to legitimately send them money.
To learn about ways to protect yourself from scams and frauds, the OPP encourages community members to consult the Competition Bureau Canada, The Little Black Book of Scams, which can be found here.
If you are the recipient of a fraudulent call, text or email, you may report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit here.
If you have fallen victim to this scam, or any other crime, please contact your local police service.
