The OPP are giving the public a heads up about a three new phone scams happening in the region.
One of the scams is targeting new Canadians where a man is calling and pretending to work for Canadian Immigration. The victim in this case is told they didn't complete a report after arriving in Canada and as a result are being assessed a penalty. They are then told if they need to pay the money right away or they will arrested and sent back to their home country. OPP are warning the public this is a scam and if you get a call like this to hang up immediately.
Another scam being reported by the Woodstock Police involves someone calling and pretending to work for the Canada Revenue Agency. In this scam the victim is told there is a warrant out for their arrest because they failed to pay taxes. However if you send cash through a prepaid credit card all will be forgiven. Woodstock Police are devising this is a scam and to hang up the phone immediately.
Finally another scam in the region comes from a man posing as a lawyer who tells the potentially victim they have won the lottery. Only catch is you have to pay the Provincial Sales tax through money transfers in order to claim the prize. Police are advising this is a scam and again telling people to hang up the phone immediately.
One thing to remember if it seems to good to be true it probably is and if you get any calls like the ones in this report please contact police or the anti fraud agency at 1-888-495-8501.
