A campaign to urge parents to set a good example for their kids to follow
OXFORD COUNTY - Wearing a bicycle helmet could save your life at any age.
That's the message presented by They Will 2 - a campaign urging parents to strap in and set a good example. Oxford Public Health Nurse Lorna Boratto says parents will often set the example children will follow for the rest of their lives. "For example quite frequently we see families out for a family bike ride - which is wonderful. The kids will have helmets on and the parents do not. So what is that message the parents are giving to their children? That as the children get older they'll say 'Well mom and dad never wore helmets when they no longer had to by law, so why should I?"
And that message doesn't necessarily stop with bicycle safety. "Well right now we're focusing on bicycle helmets, but really it would be anything," says Boratto. "So another example would be distracted driving so...if a parent is driving and using a cell phone in the car and their children see it then what message are they - what are they giving? What message?"
The They Will 2 Website also offers lots of tips on bike safety, such as how to tell when a helmet properly fits.
