INGERSOLL - When it comes to big cheeses, they come no bigger.
A special anniversary was marked in Ingersoll yesterday - the 150th anniversary of The Big Cheese.
This mammoth creation was made thanks to a cooperative effort according to Curator of the Ingersoll Cheese and Agriculture Museum Scott Gillies.
"Three factories made their own cheese and brought it here to the Harris operation, but it back into small curd, packed it into a seven foot diameter steel wheel and created a 7300 pound wheel of cheese"
This wheel of cheese was created to take advantage of a lucrative British market, and as it toured Gillies says it established Oxford as the Dairy Capital.
"It went to the New York State Fair and then across the ocean and toured the English countryside. It was eventually bought by a Liverpool merchant who placed an order for a lot more cheese."
During a special ceremony a plaque from the Ontario Heritage Trust was unveiled.
