High School students have been left out in the cold as their winter sports season has been officially put on ice. As expected, the Thames Valley District School Board has canceled the remainder of the winter sports season. That's due to the teachers withdrawing participation in extra-curricular activities, in protest of the Liberal government imposing a contract on them. Before the Christmas break, an appeal was put out for parent coaches and coach liaisons, but Board Superintendent Laura Elliott says no teams could be formed. "I think parents and community members are interested, but it's a matter of making a fairly big commitment in terms of time and energy, but also looking at the times when the students are ready to engage in high school sports may not be at a time when it's convenient for them." Elliott says a decision on spring sports will be dealt with at a later date. "We are monitoring the labour situation and if things change, we'll be ready to go for a spring season." The school calendar moves from winter to spring sports in March.
