Thames River Wetlands is Ready for Spring

Phase 2 of the The Thames River Wetlands Beachville Restoration Project is finished and local wildlife is flourishing.

BEACHVILLE - The Thames River Wetlands Beachville Restoration Project has finished phase 2 and local wildlife and water fowl are flourishing in the area. 

Phase 2 was completed thanks to a $25,000 donation from the Cowan Foundation to support the naturalization of floodplain into the ecosystem. This will support wildlife and prevent future downstream flooding. 

Vice Chair of Stewardship Oxford Philip Holst tells Heart FM the types of animals that are living in the Wetland. 

"Mostly aquatic species like amphibians, insects, a lot of water birds that now have more open water habitat and will use have more aquatic vegetation, certainly the plant species are going to be a lot more common and abundant as well." 

The Wetlands is also part of the Oxford County trail system and offers a unique view of mother nature with chances to climb hills and take in the area. Warden David Mayberry tells Heart FM the trail system is great for the local residents. 

"I think the idea of having a trail through it so the people of Oxford County can walk along and experience and enjoy the nature that surrounds them and as we learn to appreciate it, then we want to encourage it. We know that eventually we all have to get along in one ecosystem and so we are sort of wanting to encourage the public that maybe doesn't have the chance to experience nature first hand that they have that opportunity because I think it is good for all of us." 

The Restoration Project is a joint effort from Stewardship Oxford, Ducks Unlimited and Oxford County. They have been working on restoring the area which was previously just unused farm pasture for the past 6 years. Phase 2 wrapped up in the fall and they do plan on doing some more work this Spring.
