Residents of Oxford County will now be available to text with 9-1-1 dispatchers.
Residents of Oxford County will now be able to text with 9-1-1 operators.
The service was designed for people who are deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and speech impaired. Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen tells Heart FM you do need to contact your service provider to get it linked to your device.
"After you have contacted your service provide it is quite simple, you dial 9-1-1, just like they normally would if they needed us, it's important to dial 9-1-1, not text it, so after you dial 9-1-1 an icon comes up on our dispatchers screens to indicate they have this service and the dispatcher start texting them back. They will answer the phone with text messages the same way they would verbally answer and they will text you asking if you need Police Fire or Ambulance and you can respond to them with a text."
The service is available right now to anyone in the County, all you have to do is contact your service provider to get it activated. Deputy Chief Darren Sweazy says they are really excited to offer this to residents in the County.
"Woodstock Police are excited about the 911 launch. This is a progressive piece of technology that is being offered to all Oxford County residents, visitors and people traveling through our County. We can now ensure all members of our community are able to communicate with emergency services if required."
