Texas Low to Deliver January Thaw

Friday and Saturday may feel like late-April, rather than mid-January. That's what Environment Canada is saying in a special weather statement. A low pressure system is forecasted to move into our area from Texas, bringing some rain, and mild temperatures into the weekend. 10-20mm of rain is in the forecast starting overnight, and continuing through the day on Friday. That, combined with high temperatures of 8 and 9 degrees Friday and Saturday will have Woodstock flirting with the 10-degree mark in the middle of the coldest month of the year. Environment Canada Meteorologist Peter Kimba says this kind of January thaw has happened before. "I wouldn't say it's freakish. Weather is always variable...it goes up and it goes down. It's normal to have variations in weather. The record highs for this time of year would be around 11-degrees, that means we've had those kinds of temperatures in the past." Kimba says this year's January thaw likely won't be record setting. "The records for those days are about 11-degrees set in 1975 and 1995. We'll probably be close, but no cigar." What it will mean is all of the snow will had will be melted in short order, which could lead to some high river flows and slippery banks over the coming days.
