OAKVILLE - Team Duncan representing the Woodstock Curling rink won the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard over the weekend.
The team is made up of players from the GTA and features second Rachelle Strybosch, who is the only player actually from Woodstock. Strybosch still curls with the Woodstock Curling Club in the ladies league.
The Stu Sells Tankard featured some of the top rinks in Ontario, including the reigning junior champion, the Zacharias rink out of Manitoba. This tankard was a triple elimination knockout. Team Duncan actually lost their second game, putting them in the B division. From there, they ran the table and did not look back.
Strybosch says they ran the table after that loss on Friday.
"We ended up qualifying through the B side, so we actually got all of Sunday off, which was nice, we were able to spend some time with family on Thanksgiving. We were back in playoffs Monday morning, we played the quarterfinals at 9:00 am. Then our semi finals, were an hour after where we played team Zacharias and won that game, before taking on Shannon Jay from Ontario in the final at 4:00 pm."
Team Duncan won the final 7-2 to win the tankard. They're next big test comes up at the end of this month when they head to Halifax for Olympic pre-trials. The top two rinks will qualify for the Olympic trials to compete for Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
