Tavistock Mosquito Trap Tests Positive for West Nile

Southwestern Public Health has found West Nile in Oxford County.

TAVISTOCK - A mosquito trap in Tavistock has tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Southwestern Public Health has multiple traps set up through Oxford, Elgin and St. Thomas and tests them regularly for West Nile. With one of the traps testing positive, the health unit has a few tips on how you can protect yourself.

This includes wearing light coloured, long sleeved clothing and bug spray with DEET.

You should also remove all standing water from your property to reduce mosquito breeding environments. If you have a pool, make sure you keep the pump circulating. Water in bird bathes can be switched out every other day.

Most people infected with West Nile don't get sick, but those who do experience mild flu-like symptoms for the most part. Less than one percent of people infected with West Nile get seriously ill.
