Pretty soon all front line officers in Woodstock will be equipped with Tasers
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police has started the process of equipping all front line officers with latest less lethal Taser technology.
Officers will start carrying the feature rich yellow TaserX2 on the streets of Woodstock. The Taser provides officers with another less lethal option when confronted with violent situations. Right now only supervisors and tactical members will carry the new Taser, however they will given to all officers soon.
Inspector of Operations Paul Hess said the Taser is but one use-of-force option available to our Officers.
"Police Officers are trained to use force appropriate to the level of risk presented by the subject towards bystanders, officers, or him/herself. The Taser is a valuable intermediate use of force option that can be used in certain situations, taking into account the totality of the circumstances and the imminent need for control of a subject. All use or deployment of the unit is captured by the unit and retained electronically."
Chief Bill Renton advises that the service has just received the new Taser and the training unit is just beginning the transition to the new units.
"This transition will take the better part of the year to complete. He advises our members are trained to use de-escalation tactics first whenever possible, but when that approach does not work, we need to equip our officers with another tool. Expanded Taser deployment will help protect our citizens, our officers and assist in keeping our community safe."
