SWPH Record 9 COVID-19 Related Deaths in 3 Days

Nine people have died in the past 3 days in SWPH region and 14 out of 34 LTC and retirement homes are currently in outbreak.

Southwestern Public Health has recorded 9 COVID-19 related deaths in the past 3 days.

Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock says we are also dealing with a serious situation at our long term care homes. 

"Currently 14 of our 34 retirement homes and long term care homes are in outbreak and when they are in outbreak, this means they have at least 2 cases in each of these settings, some have more than 30 resident and staff cases. So these are substantial outbreaks." 

Dr. Lock says they can't provide the same kind of date right now, due to a lack of testing. She can confirm that COVID-19 is spreading like wildfire in our community.

"Our weekly percent positivity, so that is the PCR tests that are positive each week is 24.8%, this is very high, prior to Omicron, this had never been higher than 6 percent for us. This means there is a lot of COVID circulating in our community."

The fatality rate over the entire pandemic in SWPH is 1.47%, which is higher than the Ontario rate at 1.24%. 

The ages of those who have died range from 39-100. The average age of fatality is 77.
