SWPH Measles Update

12 cases have been confirmed since January 1st in the region.

OXFORD - A virtual briefing was held today to combat the growing number of measles cases in our community.

Southwestern Public Health Unit and Grand Erie Public Health Unit jointly provided an update.  Medical Officer of Health for our Region Dr. Ninh Tran breaks down the numbers and how you can avoid the disease.  "12 Confirmed cases of measles reported to our health unit since January 1st, 2025.  I do want to note that the first line of defense against measles is to make sure you and your loved ones are up to date with your immunizations."

The Health Unit covers Oxford County, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas, and Dr. Tran details how you can stay protected against measles.  "Adults that are born before 1970 are considered protected against measles, the only exceptions are if you work in healthcare or you are a member of the military.  For those who are born in or after 1970 two doses of measles-containing vaccine provides up to 99% lifelong protection."  

Dr. Tran is asking parents to protect their children early.  He recommends a vaccine dose when a child is between six and eleven months old.
