Swing Into Something New

Calling all dancers and wanna-be dancers! Swing dance is coming to Ingersoll.

INGERSOLL - The Oxford Swing and Jazz Club wants everyone to break out their dancing shoes.

They will be hosting their first Swingersoll event on Saturday April 8 at 156 Victoria Street in Ingersoll. People of all ages will be able to dance the night away from 9 p.m. until midnight.

Club Founder and President Nadine Lulu says swing dancing is actually a lot easier than it looks.

"It looks like a lot of jumping around and flying in the air when you see it on movies and television. There's a lot more - like 99 percent really - that we do stepping on the floor and it's actually very accessible to all ages."

Although the event is open to all ages Lulu recommends children stick close to their parents if they choose to come.

You don't even need to have any dancing experience to participate. Lulu tells Heart FM they will be holding an optional free lesson one hour beforehand.

"We're going to have a pre-lesson at the beginning of every dance to help people to get familiar with what is the dance, what are some of the movements, how to lead, and how to follow."

Dancers are asked to bring indoor shoes with non marking shoes if they choose to participate. Lulu recommends flat sneakers (ex: Keds or Sketchers) or a dressier shoe with a wedge style heel. Swing dancing involves a lot of gliding so you do not want to wear shoes that will stick to the floor. When it comes to clothing people can wear whatever they are comfortable in, they can also dress up according to the 1920-1950's eras if they want.

If you're not sure if you feel comfortable dancing, seats will be set up so you can sit and watch.

Admission is $10 for an adult or $8 for a senior. Students can also get in for $8 if they bring ID. Swingersoll will be held on the second Saturday of every month.
