Oxford County Public Health is reminding parents to keep your swimming pool gate closed and locked
OXFORD COUNTY - Safety should be at the top of mind when it comes to swimming this summer.
Oxford Public Health is reminding pool owners to keep your gates closed and make sure if you have young children they can't access the pool without you knowing.
Public Health Nurse Lorna Boratto says young kids need to be supervised when they are in the water. " I also want to stress the importance of being sober when your around water, so keeping the drinking if you are doing that at a minimum, water and booze do not mix, both in terms of your own safety and being aware and alert so you can watch your children."
Boratto notes sometimes parents forget to lock the outside door from the house which can access the pool and toddlers and young children are drawn to the water. Also she says if you head to the beach this summer to make sure to watch for things like undertows at Lake Erie and kids should be supervised at all times. Boratto says it is a good idea to set parameters and you don't want your kids heading too far from shore. She also wants to stress the importance of wearing a certified life jacket if your child is not a strong swimmer. Water wings won't always cut it an it is important they have a proper flotation device in the water.
