The supplies for students program is ensuring no child goes without in Southwestern Ontario.
OXFORD COUNTY- It started with two moms and has evolved into a cross school district effort to provide students in need with new school supplies.
The annual program is in it's 13th year and provides supplies to students anywhere across from Port Stanley to Stratford, including Oxford County. This year around 2000 backpacks designed for various grades have been distributed to school principals. The principals then hand out the back packs. The schools are the ones who request how many back packs they need. If a child is in need of supplies or a back pack and would like to be apart of the program; parents and students can approach their principal about recieving one.
The program hosts several donation drive events throughout the year to prepare for the following school year, which include the Stuff-A-Bus event. Area businesses, volunteers and various organizations have banded together to make the program a success.
Supplies for Students co-ordinator Chantal McLaughlin says, "it has become a much more community driven program, and we have sponsors like TD employees they run the Back in Class program- they brought in over 800 back packs this year."
Back packs are given to schools within the Thames Valley District School board and the London District Catholic School board.
