Kids in Oxford County are starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast
WOODSTOCK - The Student Nutrition Program in Oxford County kicked off this morning.
39 schools in the County participate in the program that provides universal access to nutritious foods by providing morning meals or snacks to students. School nutrition coordinator and dietician Kelly Ferguson tells Heart FM statistics show kids do better in school when they have had breakfast.
"This program does address a few needs in the community, it addresses the students who didn't eat breakfast whether that be because their family lacked financial means or because busy families are working in the morning and it gets missed, but it also helps them to learn better when they get to school. Really the benefit is we see improved learning when students are well fed and it gives them an opportunity to try new healthy foods and really get exposed to those healthy foods so they might be more likely to eat them later on in life as they continue to grow."
Ferguson says they held their kickoff breakfast at the Quality Inn and Suites as a way to thank the hundreds of volunteers who support the program. Funding for the meals is provided by annual grant money from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, the United Way of Oxford, First Ontario Credit Union along with corporate and private donations. Ferguson says they received another big donation from the First Ontario Credit Union who donated $25,000 for the second year in a row."
