Don't Veer for Deer is the message from the Oxford OPP who respond to a ton of wildlife collisions this time of year.
Oxford OPP are getting the message out to watch out for wildlife this time of year.
Constable Stacey Culbert tells Heart FM they always end up getting more calls for service this time of year.
"It's one of the busiest times of year for those collisions to be occurring, you know the old saying is a deer in a headlights, they are not going to move as say a squirrel would, your having to really have your reaction time be very quick in circumstances like that."
Culbert says if you see a deer on the road to hit the brakes and never swerve suddenly to avoid an animal because it could result in a more serious collision.
"They have to stop as safely as possible, brake firmly if you see an animal is standing there or at the side of the road but you have to always maintain control of your vehicle, so if your going to swerve suddenly, that's when usually the most damage happens because people are leaving the roadways."
Driving tips to avoid wildlife:
- If you see wildlife beside the road, slow down and pass carefully as they may bolt suddenly onto the road
- Stay in control of your vehicle and never swerve suddenly to avoid an animal.
- Stop as safely as possible.
- Brake firmly if an animal is standing on or crossing the road and remember if one animal crosses the road others may follow
- Never assume an animal will move out of your way.
- If hitting animal is unavoidable, remember to stay in control and look where you want to go and to the at the animal
- At night use your high beams where possible and watch for the glowing eyes of animals ahead
Stay alert and remember that animals can come onto the roadways at any time of the day.
