Norfolk OPP are reminding snowmobilers to stay off the ice after a sled and an ATV went into the waters of Lake Erie near Long Point.
Norfolk OPP are reminding everyone to stay off the ice after a close call with a snowmobiler today.
Constable Ed Sanchuk says a snowmobile and an ATV went through the ice on Sunday.
"Just after 1 pm in the afternoon at Long Point in Lake Erie, the OPP received an emergency 9-1-1 call that a snowmobile went through the ice. Officers arrived on scene only to find a person an ATV was trying to pull the snowmobile out of the water. That ATV went through the ice as well."
Sanchuk says luckily the two people involved from Essex County were not injured. He does want to remind everyone to stay off the ice.
"We want to put it out there that no ice is safe ice, when you travel onto the ice and you hit the ice the wrong way, there is the potential for you to knock yourself out, become unconscious and drown in that water."
Sanchuk says this past weekend an 11 year old and 15 year old youth lost their lives as a result of snowmobiling across open waters in the Gravenhurst area.
Tragedy averted after snowmobile goes through #ice. What are YOU doing to put your safety as a priority. #NorfolkOPP https://t.co/aboGL4dE2U
