Thousands of people suffer from Addictions in Oxford County every day.
WOODSTOCK - Stage for Change is coming to Woodstock this November to bring awareness of addictions in Oxford County.
Thousands of people in Oxford struggle with addiction every day. The most common problem is alcohol, however drugs have become a real concern in the community. Cannabis use is rampant, and over the past five years we have seen more and more people using opiates like OxyContin. Another drug that has reared it's ugly head into Oxford is Crystal Meth.
Executive Director of Addiction Services Thames Valley Linda Sibley tells Heart FM funds from the Stage for Change will go towards the POSSIBLE Campaign. "The possible campaign is an anti stigma and education awareness campaign, that uses videos and images through a program called photo voice to stimulate conversation and to present a much more positive understanding of what it is like to suffer from addiction." They are hoping to raise funds for the POSSIBLE campaign during addictions awareness week, which is why they are bringing the popular stage for change event to Woodstock. The addiction centre is hoping to find some local people who are willing to share their story so they can help others overcome addiction.
Sibley says the event will feature live music, art and will take place during drug addiction awareness week in November at WCI. "The Stage for Change, given the language we chose on purpose, is really about the art, it can be anything, we want it to be about music and art, it could be spoken word, it can be videos. The Addiction Services Thames Valley of Thames Valley has asked Oxford County for some financial support to help with the project. Council will have staff write up a report and will decide if they are going to contribute funds to the project in the fall.
