St Marys Residents Start Letter Campaign to Save Commuter Train

St Marys residents are putting pen to paper in an effort to save their commuter train. Community members met with Via Rail Canada officials Thursday to discuss challenges they face now that their commuter train to Toronto stopped running. Committee Member for Save Via, Chris West says Via has agreed to set up a working group and the community will begin writing letters to government officials for support. West says the main challenge for the train is funding. "They're taking in let's say $360 million and expending $500 million a year and that's one of the big challenges when the federal government is trying to tighten things up. That's probably the greatest challenge. And I think they have a challenge of how they use some of the assets. You know, they've got a situation where the break even is 125 passengers per train." West says while the rail line has some trains full, others barely have any riders at all. When Via cut the commuter train back in October, officials said only nine riders used the service on a regular basis.
