OXFORD/ST.THOMAS/ELGIN - Southwestern Public Health's mass vaccination clinics will only administer first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to youth over the next couple of days.
Their next shipment of Pfizer has been delayed about two or three days and Pfizer is the only vaccine that has been approved for those between the ages of 12 and 17.
Adults going in for their second dose today only, will also be able to receive Pfizer if that's the vaccine they chose.
The Health Unit recently received a large shipment of the Moderna vaccine, so all other adults will be able to receive that vaccine over the next couple of days.
Jaime Fletcher, the Program Manager overseeing Southwestern Public Health's mass immunization program, says there is no reason for anyone to cancel their vaccination appointment this week.
“Like public health units across the province, we’re faced with a delayed shipment of Pfizer. And like our public health colleagues, we are encouraging you to attend your appointment as scheduled. It is critically important we get doses in arms quickly before the Delta variant becomes the dominant strain of COVID-19 in the province."
Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock stated last week that vaccine mixing is a safe and standard practice for immunization. She also said the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are interchangeable, so you shouldn't be stuck on a specific brand name when you go in for your vaccination appointment.
