Oxford County council recently reviewed a development charges study. Bridges, roads and wastewater were among the services included in the study.
OXFORD COUNTY - A public meeting was recently held at Oxford County council on development charges.
A development charges study must be reviewed and updated every four to five years.
Warden Larry Martin says the charges are available to help services throughout the County.
"It's different but the development charges are there to help those who need to develop and help pay for it, and that's basically what's it's about. If you're going to develop then there's a set charge in certain services that we provide that a percentage of that goes to that service, and that helps to enhance, fulfill and improve that service and provide it to the public."
Among the services that were looked at included roads, wastewater and garbage.
Warden Martin says they will get input from the public before making a decision near the end of June.
"What will happen is any input that the public has between now and June 26th will be added onto it and they will be presented to council on the 26th, at which time they will either accept, reject or filter through it."
According to council's report, staff received the province's Bill 108 - Proposed Changes to Development Charges Act. The Act proposes a transfer of some eligible development charges, including land ambulance and library services, to a Community Benefit Charge.
The report also states that many of the development charges administered by the County remain unchanged, including wastewater, roads and waste diversion. The County's current development charge by-laws will require an update by the end of July, therefore they will need to change their new by-laws once the bill has been passed.
