The OPP is looking to hundreds of new officers in the next couple of years.
OXFORD COUNTY - The OPP is hoping to use social media as a recruiting tool.
With a number of officers set to retire in the upcoming years, the OPP will be going on a bit of a hiring spree with hundreds of jobs opening up. One thing they will be doing is sharing their job experiences online through social media. Sergeant Peter Leon tells Heart FM they have really put on a focus on social media over the past couple of years.
"I think it is all in a means to continue the ongoing process of educating the public, that the OPP is not just an organization that is out there to answer calls for service, we are out there to provide a valuable service to the community which includes public safety."
Tonight officers in the West region including Oxford County will be live tweeting some of their patrols and calls for service. You can follow them on twitter from 6 - 11 pm.
"And we will be tweeting out the calls for service, obviously we will have to use some forms of discretion, we won't be able to go into complete details, but again it will kind of highlight that a career in policing is not the same day to day."
Some other ways the force plans to use social media to recruit new officers include:
On Wednesday February 10, 2016, a “Breaking Barriers” live-stream event will be hosted whereby OPP officers from varying social and cultural backgrounds will be sharing their experiences concerning every step of their OPP career and On Wednesday February 17, 2016, Commissioner Vince Hawkes will provide opening remarks to a live stream OPP Recruitment Information Session during which OPP Officers will discuss what it takes to be a competitive candidate.
