Fire crews were called to Huron Park Secondary School Monday afternoon after smoke was reported. One teen faces arson charges.
WOODSTOCK -- Reports of smoke Monday afternoon at Huron Park Secondary School in Woodstock brought a swift reaction from Woodstock Fire Department.
Lisa Woods, Public Information Coordinator with Woodstock Fire Department says fire crews were called to the school just before 2:30 PM after smoke was reported coming from a washroom inside the school.
"We did enter under smoke conditions and we found a small fire which was put out very quickly, further investigation was turned over to Woodstock Police."
Community Service Cst. with Woodstock Police Service, Steven McEwen confirmed officers were on scene Monday afternoon to investigate and try to determine a cause for the blaze.
Students were sent home near the end the day because of smoke in the school's hallways.
"As soon as the fire alarm registered students were evacuated from the building, due to the smoke in the building the students were let go early from the school," Woods confirmed.
Tuesday afternoon, Woodstock Police confirmed that a 15 year-old youth had been charged with arson and will answer to their charges in court. The damages are estimated to be roughly $20,000.
