The Special Investigations Unit has cleared the Oxford OPP of any wrongdoing after a 24 year old man suffered a self inflicted injury while in police custody.
TILLSONBURG - The Special Investigations Unit has cleared the Oxford OPP of any wrongdoing after a man was injured in their custody.
The investigation started after 24 year old man was injured after he was arrested in Tillsonburg in October. The man was arrested after single vehicle crash at the intersection of Broadway and Lisgar Avenue on October 28th at 3:00 am. While in a holding cell, the man struck the wall with his left hand, which resulted in him sustaining a serious injury.
The SIU says the man has admitted to inflicting this wound on himself and a video inside his cell confirms this. The SIU has terminated the investigation.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must
consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
