Tillsonburg's Tyson MacDonald will compete in his first Para Pan-American Games this Sunday in Peru. Among the events he'll be in include the 200 metre freestyle and a 4x100m S14 mixed freestyle relay.
TILLSONBURG - Tillsonburg's Tyson MacDonald is heading to the ParaPan American Games in Peru.
He will be competing in multiple events, including the 100 metre breaststroke.
MacDonald says he's excited to be representing Canada.
"It'll be a good indicator of what the 2020 Olympic Trials look like in terms of where I stack up against the world. I'll be able to use this as another stepping stone opportunity, another goal achieved and just something to look forward to heading into, hopefully, the 2020 Paralympics Games."
He qualified for the Games by first achieving S14 classification in Australia in February. An S14 classification is where an athlete is considered to have some form of intellectual impairment, which comes with experts' documentation.
MacDonald says he then competed in the Olympic Swimming Trials this past April in Toronto.
"It's always been a stepping stone sort of pattern knowing as of April that I made the team it allowed me to kind of prepare myself mentally, but also physically in terms of getting ready for competition of this stage."
He will be among approximately 144 Canadians competing, which is the largest event ever for the ParaPan-Am Games. This year's Games will also feature a record of 1,850 athletes.
He travelled to Montreal last Thursday where he had a couple of days of staging with Team Canada. He left for Lima, where the Games are held, on August 17th.
MacDonald's first event will be this Sunday and he'll be competing until August 31st.
