Sidewalk Talk In Woodstock

Now that the province has passed new sidewalk maintenance standards, the city of Woodstock now has to find a way to address sidewalk snow removal.

WOODSTOCK - It's still summer, but Woodstock City Council is already talking sidewalk snow removal.

The province recently passed new sidewalk maintenance standards, so now the city has to find a way to address snow removal on all sidewalks.

City Engineer Harold de Haan says they have a couple ideas in mind.

"We see two options; either all of the sidewalks have to be cleared using city staff and equipment or you pass a by-law for property owners to clear the sidewalk in front of their property."

de Haan adds the bylaw is the much cheaper option. The city would have to hire more employees and purchase more equipment if they were to take on the job.

de Haan says it's going to be a while before a decision is made.

"We're going to present both options as part of the budget deliberations in the New Year for the 2019 budget. Council can pick which way they want to go then and it will be in place for the following winter."

With the 2018 budget already passed and a municipal election on the horizon, council can't make a decision before this coming winter. de Haan says we will continue with the good neighbour policy in the meantime.
