Shoveling Safety

Always stay safe when shoveling snow near busy roads.

With the city's first snow fall, residents are reminded to be safe when shoveling.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford Public Health is encouraging residents to be a good neighbour and help older residents shovel their walkways. 

As we are experiencing our first snowfall of the season, Public Health Nurse Lorna Buratto says it's important to think of your heart when shovelling but also your back. 

"It's best to get out and shovel when there's small amounts of snow, not wait until you have this humongous amount to do all at once. If you possibly can, get out and shovel more frequently, it's a whole lot easier on your back and your whole body." Buratto continues "Be lifting with your legs, not putting all of that weight on your back muscles and to bend your knees, lift with your legs and then move to where you need to dump the snow and not fling it and kind of twist and turn as you're doing it."

"Remember to keep breathing," says Buratto, "quite frequently when we are lifting heavy loads we tend to hold our breath which increases internal pressure so just again, take it slow and easy and breathe."

Buratto also encourages residents to get out the sand and salt as soon as possible to ensure others aren't falling on walkways.
