Students from the School Within A College program have created an uplifting mural for the Oxford County Community Health Centre
WOODSTOCK - The Oxford County Community Health Centre has been given a beautiful facelift thanks to the students from the School Within A College (SWAC).
SWAC is a class of 18 high school students who are earning college credits and high school credits at the same time. This Spring they decided on an art project called 'The Journey' where they created a mural inside the Health Centre.
Outreach Worker Trevor McLennan tells Heart FM the mural will encompass an entire wall inside the centre.
"And the group came up with this idea of creating a journey, because everyone is on a journey of some sort and it starts in kind of a dark place and there is actually a path that runs the entire length of the wall and the path goes from a dark place to a very light place. It shows the journey of people going from some place in their life that wasn't so good and they can follow a path and eventually they will end up in a good spot."
Student Chelsea Lively was one of the artists on the project and she explains what she hopes people will take away from the painting.
"I think the most important thing that people are going to take away from the mural is HOPE; that they are not alone when it comes to their struggles, that there are ways you can put your troubles into something beautiful and help others."
The project is a community endeavour. Many community members have donated supplies or money to help support the project. The mural will be unveiled on Tuesday night and the public is welcome to stop by the Health Centre in the future to check it out.
