Sharing the Court House Security Costs

The Woodstock Police Services Board is hoping to get some financial support from the County to help cover the cost of security at the court house in Woodstock.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service Board is asking for some help from the County to help cover the costs of court security.

Chair of the board Mary Anne Silverthorn says that despite the fact the entire county uses the Courthouse in Woodstock all of the security costs are handled by the Woodstock Police Services Board.

"We as a board are saddled with the full responsibility and cost for the court house, we are assigned that from the police act, but we feel that since it is a county courthouse that we would like some financial consideration given to us from the County."

After Provincial grants they are left to pay over $310,000 for the full time guards and one sworn constable assigned to the court house.

"Approximately $95,000 of that is for the full time sworn in police officer that we have assigned to the court house as a result of security issues in other area's, most notably the shooting at the Brampton court house last year."

Silverthorn says they are looking for some kind of support.

"We are just looking for them to reconsider this, we used get money from them and then it was dropped and so we are just now at the part again knowing what kind of strain this puts on the police budget and if they could be just somewhat supportive of just even for the officer that's there."

Council decided to accept the deputation as information and a report will be brought back at a later date.
