Alexandra Hospital in Ingersoll cutting outpatient lab services come July 1
In an effort to help balance their books, Ingersoll's Alexandra Hospital is preparing to close their lab and move all scoping to the Tillsonburg Hospital.
Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey told County Council of the move Wednesday morning but stressed the hospital was not in danger of shutting down.
Comiskey says the explanation he was given from the hospital was that they were receiving fewer funds each year from the province.
"Even before we look at a budget, every April 1 we start with a $500,000 deficit so we have to, as such, come up with ways to keep our hospital alive, keep it active and keep it within the community."
Comiskey says they already have a good lab in the town that was splitting services with the hospital but will now be handling all of the lab patients.
"Now it enables them to save the dollars by not having the lab within Alexandra Hospital but having the lab still within Ingersoll and it certainly helps a private industry and beefs up their business while still allowing us to keep our doors open."
Comiskey says when he met with hospital administration he asked point blank, what is the future of Alexandra Hospital.
"Number one the hospital is not closing and number two neither is our Emergency. We will always have that ability, like I said, the services may be moved around a little bit and I guess in this day and age with the dollars that are available for the community we have to start to specialize to make it work."
Comiskey says he believes July 1 is the date the lab will move all of their services to a private lab in town.
He believes one of the hospital's goals is to move staff around so no one loses their job.
A call to Alexandra Hospital's Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive Lisa Gardner was not immediately returned.
