Heinz announces closure of Leamington factory, cutting 740 jobs
A devastating blow for the town of Leamington.
The longstanding Heinz ketchup factory is going to be closing.
Heinz announced a company consolidation today, closing the Leamington plant in June, and two other plants in the US in Florence, S.C., and Pocatello, Ind.
For Leamington, it's a loss of 740 jobs, and $1-million in tax revenue for the town. The plant has been in operation there for 104-years.
It's also expected to have a ripple effect in the agriculture industry with numerous tomato growers around the Leamington area, who may have to look at changing crops.
Heinz also has a salad dressing plant in St. Mary's that will not be affected by today's announcement.
