Police are warning Perth County residents about a scam where the caller is pretending to work for the Township of Perth East.
TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST - Several residents in Perth County have complained to police about a new phone scam in the region.
Someone is calling them pretending to work for the Township of Pert East. The scammer will ask for personal information, like your social insurance number and they are threatening legal action, if you don't comply.
Police want everyone in the County to know that this is a scam and that the Township will never call and threaten you like this or ask for personal sensitive information over the phone.
Perth County OPP are reminding everyone of the following;
- Never send money, or give credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know and trust. A request to send money to someone using Google Play or Apple ITunes cards should be a red flag.
- Don't give out any personal information over the phone, in an email or when you are chatting online. Like any scam, use your computer to your advantage. Educate yourself. Check the person's name, the company name the addresses used, and ask yourself, "Would this be normal behaviour?"
- It's not always easy to spot scams, and new ones are invented every day.
