Scam Attempts on the Rise

Several scams are making the rounds again. Police warn everyone to be cautious and just hang up.

OPP have been receiving numerous reports of the Canada Revenue Agency scam lately.

Sergeant Dave Rektor reminds everyone that the CRA does not make these kinds of calls.

"First off Canada Revenue Agency does not call and ask for personal information - that's your number one warning. They don't threaten to send police to your home. If anybody is asking for personal information, anything over the phone that you aren't comfortable with, that should set off warning bells in your mind and just hang up on those people." 

Rektor says scammers are tenacious and will keep making calls to as many people as possible.

"About two out of every thousand people will get hooked by one of these scams. Whether it is the CRA, or emergency scam, or a love scam - [the victims] can get conned out of a lot of money. So they target everybody, in hopes that one or two vulnerable people say yes or send money."

If you are contacted by a scammer just hang up and report the number to OPP or Canadian Anti-Fraud.
