A new take on the grandparent or emergency scam is making the rounds locally.
Oxford OPP are warning the public about a scam that has reared it's ugly head into the region.
The Internet scam generally involves email hacking and prays on families. How it works is someone will hack into a loved ones email account and send you an email saying they need cash immediately. It usually has to do with someone being stranded while travelling abroad, mugged or that they lost all their money and identification and need some cash fast to get home. The scanner asks for money to be sent by Western Union or MoneyGram to a foreign country.
Police are warning the public to never transfer funds unless you are 100 percent certain you know where they are coming from and to ask lot's of questions that only the loved one would know the answer too.
Protect Yourself
- Beware of urgent requests for funds from known contacts claiming to be traveling abroad.
- Avoid logging into your accounts from untrusted computers.
- Create strong passwords and security questions and answers.
- Do your research; if this is someone you know you may be able to call them or other family members and friends to confirm their whereabouts.
- NEVER send money to a stranger, always check with someone you trust before you ever send money.
- If in doubt, contact your local police authority.
