A new scam in the Friendly City has scammers pretending to work for WPS and the caller I.D. will even show up as WPS number.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are warning the public about a phone scam in the Friendly City that makes it seem like you are getting a call from an officer.
The caller ID in the phone scam will show up as a Woodstock Police Service number. Recently someone got a call like this and the scammer told them their identity had been compromised. They told the victim that if they did not comply with their demands, they would be charged for obstructing police. The scammer was able to provide the victim with confidential personal information including the victim’s Social Insurance Number to “verify” the “officer” was legitimate.
The scammer asked the victim to withdraw a large sum of money and drive it to the nearest Bitcoin machine – in Burlington, and transfer the money to the bar codes provided.
Please note:
- The police will never request money be sent to them to get someone out of jail
- The police will never request money be converted to “Bitcoin”
- Please contact your local police office before sending any money to ensure that it is not a scam
The Woodstock Police Service would like to encourage everyone to report information about scams and frauds to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or www.antifraudcenter.ca.
