Kids in Oxford County can get their flu shots without a needle this year.
If your little ones are afraid of needles, Oxford County Public Health is offering a different kind of flu shot to help them stay healthy this winter.
Health Protection Supervisor Joanne Andrews says the FluMist alternative will be available at clinics this year. "So instead of getting an injection in the arm, the vaccine is administered in a spray. A little bit in each nostril, and it provides a good immune response to protect against four different strains of the virus."
Andrews says although kids up to 17 can get this FluMist option, it is more effective in younger children. "It's recommended for children from 2 - 5 because seems to give them a very good immune response, so it means that they will develop a better immunity than they will to a shot. However the injection is also a very good way of protecting children against the flu."
Aside from being fuss free, the FluMist also offers protection against an additional B Strain of the Flu. Andrews tells us this extra protection is also available the traditional way. "There is an injection available this year that has four different flu strains in it as well. And that's recommended for children. The vaccine that has four different strains in it has two B strains in it, and children are more susceptible to Influenza B."
The FluMist alternative will be available at Flu Clinics throughout Oxford County. For a full list of upcoming dates and locations, CLICK HERE.
