Say Yes to Healthy Eating

A campaign has been designed to get students to chose healthier options

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County schools are asking for your help in the 'Say Yes' pledge for student nutrition programs.

The Ontario Student Nutrition program is running the online pledge form for people to show their support for these nutrition programs. 

School Nutrition Program Coordinator and registered dietitian Kelly Ferguson says this campaign could really help give kids a boost at school. "The goal of that campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of student nutrition and all the programs in our community that provide breakfast and snacks to students. So anyone is invited to go online and take a free pledge, and with each pledge a free breakfast or snack is donated to a school in our region that you get to select."

These programs have gone over very well with both teachers and students. "Student nutrition programs have benefits to learning and attention in school and also provides an opportunity for students to try new healthy foods and fruits and vegetables that they may not get to try at home," Ferguson says.

Teaching kids about healthy eating and introducing them to new foods now could help develop healthy eating habits later on. "All the snacks and meals that students receive include a fruit or vegetable and then they usually include two other foods from Canada's Food Guide so that might look like crackers and cheese or yogurt and some tortilla," Ferguson explains some of the foods kids might get to try. "There are lots of different combinations and creative things that they can do."
