Ruling Out Causes

Local excavating company works to clean up the charred remains of 598 Alberta Ave.

It could take a few weeks before we find out what caused Friday's inferno on Alberta Ave.

Some causes have been ruled out of the major fire and suspected explosion at a home on Alberta Avenue.

Today, Ontario Fire Marshal Investigator Richard Derstroff told Heart FM that a couple of possible sources have ruled out as causes of Friday's fire.  "It's still currently under investigation, but what we have made progress in is the elimination of any natural gas.  The distribution system to the residence was eliminated as a fuel for the explosion.  The appliances in the house itself were tested and found to be in good working order."

The house ignited late Friday afternoon, after a suspected explosion blew the garage door off the home.  The home was fully engulfed in flames within minutes.  Four people were taken to hospital with three of them remaining there, in stable condition.  One of two dogs was also found deceased in the home.

While the OFM will be vacating the scene later today, Derstroff says it could be a few weeks before forensic testing can be completed on items seized from the home.  "We're ruling things out, but we still have a lot of work.  Just because the on scene investigation will be completed later today, there's still work to be done."

A number of items from the home that will be sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto for testing.  Derstroff expects to have those results "in a few weeks".

Derstroff would not comment on reports of an unusual number of butane tanks found inside the home, saying that information would have to come from police.
