OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs are urging snowmobilers to stay away from riding on closed trails and frozen water following a fatality this month.
ONTARIO - A snowmobile fatality from earlier this month is prompting OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs to issue a warning to riders to stay off closed trails.
As mild temperatures approach parts of the province during the holidays, they're also urging snowmobilers to not ride on frozen water.
OPP responded to a fatality earlier this month after a man lost control of his snowmobile. It was the first snowmobile fatality of the season.
They say some of the contributing factors in snowmobile-related deaths every season include excessive speed and alcohol.
OPP say the tragic death is the latest reminder that snowmobiling comes with an unpredictable environment and unique set of risks.
They ask that you check regularly check with the OFSC Interactive Trail Guide for real-time trail availability information over the holidays and throughout the season. The OFSC prescribed trails are subject to laws governed under the Ontario Motorized Snow Vehicles Act and enforced by police throughout the province.
OPP are committed to saving lives on highways, water and trails.
The OFSC want to remind drivers to go slow when they go snowmobiling in Ontario.
