Woodstock residents brave damp weather to honour Veterans
The number of veterans in attendance continues to dwindle every year at Remembrance Day ceremonies.
Woodstock is no different where the number of empty chairs outnumbered the number of Vets in attendance.
World War II Veteran Bob Barnett notices. "I'm the average age of a WWII Veteran, and there are fewer and fewer of us around. We went to the Armistice here last Sunday and there were 5 WWII Veterans in medals, so that gives you a little idea of how many are left."
Attendance was still strong for the ceremony despite cold and damp weather, which was encouraging to the Veterans, like Barnett.
Padre Don Moore who made an address at the ceremony says he thinks attendance has been rising steadily over the last few years. "I think people are more and more interested in the military in Canada, which has not always been the case. I also think the war in Afghanistan brought more attention to it."
There were about 1000 on hand for the ceremony, including a group from Woodstock Christian School.
They told Heart FM why they thought it was important to attend:
"We have to remember the soliders who fought for us in the war."
"I think it's important we remember the Veterans that fought for us and died for us."
"We have to remember the Veterans who died, the ones that went out there and gave it their all."
The ceremony featured longstanding traditions including the laying of wreaths, and a flyover by the Harvards.
