Local Filipino community gathers to fundraise for typhoon relief
More efforts are underway in Woodstock to help those still picking up the pieces in the Philippines.
A major typhoon decimated most of the islands. There are 7500 reported deceased or missing, and 125,000 people are living out of evacuation centres. The needs remain desperate, basic needs like clean water are scarce with many homes destroyed, and some roads still impassible from debris.
That's why this weekend, the local Filipino community is gathering at the CAW Hall for a fundraiser.
Grace Balankig explains, "We planned this as a Christmas Party for the Filipinos here. But since this typhoon happened, we thought why don't we have this Christmas Party/fundraising event for the Filipinos."
Balankig, says while the event is already booked to capacity, they are still welcoming any donations from the public.
If you would like to support the cause, you can make a donation to the Woodstock-Oxford Rotary Club, who are guaranteeing 100% of what you donate will be used to help those in need with supplies including clean water.
Click here to donate on-line, or you can mail a cheque to "Woodstock-Oxford Rotary Charitable Benefit Trust" c/o Peter Stam, Treasurer at 656441 15th Line, Woodstock, ON N4S 7W2
Tax receipts will be issued for any donations over $20, and those funds will be matched by the Canadian Government.
