When help is needed, the Red Cross is there. The Woodstock-Oxford branch of the Canadian Red Cross was there for over 650 residents last year. When people are displaced from their homes, the local Red Cross provides relief for food, shelter and clothing for the first 72-hours. George Whebell, Assistant Volunteer Operational Lead says they're always ready to respond. "We have responders that are 24-7 ready to tend to people who have been taken out of their homes for whatever the reason might be. It could be fire, it could be a flood or a sewage break in the basement or their oil tank explodes or leaks. Whatever takes you out of your house, the Red Cross will be there to help you with food, shelter, and clothing for the first 72-hours. But that's only one of the many jobs they have. The Red Cross is opening its branch up on Wednesday this week for an open house at 77 Finkle St. from 11AM-1PM. They'll be showing off their programs, and will be giving away a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit. Branch Council President, Gord Latford says having your family prepared for a disaster can have a huge impact. "People have to realize that if an occurrence did happen in this area, the more people that are ready to look after themselves, the fewer we're going to have to look after. So it's very important for everybody to have an emergency preparedness kit in your home, ready for whatever emergency might come up." March is Red Cross Month, and all this month they're also offering buy-one-g et-one-half-off on First Aid Courses.
