When a loved one is a nursing home, its natural to worry about their well being.
Elder abuse can come in many forms, and it is important to recognize warning signs.
It can present as a sudden, unexpected loss in weight, bed sores, and unclean living conditions.
Other forms are referred to as 'passive neglect' and can involve withholding medication or other resources without the intent of being abusive.
Here in Oxford, the Oxford County Elder Abuse and Neglect Committee advocates on behalf of elderly persons and works to education people about the warning signs of abuse, and what can be done if you suspect someone is being abused.
The South West Community Care Access Centre can be contacted at 519-539-1284 or toll free at 1-800-561-5490 to help provide resources and assistance when it comes to issues involving elders.
Woodstock Police Chief Bill Renton encourages people to reach out and seek help.
"If you suspect your loved one is abused go to the administration at the facility they are at. Call the police - give us a call - if you have concerns about abuse towards a resident there. You can reach out. There are those avenues to reach out."
Elder Abuse Ontario also provides resources on their website http://www.elderabuseontario.com/
Overall, local authorities are urging the public to not let the actions of one person colour their opinions of all the hard working, dedicated professionals working in retirement communities and long term care homes.
