A drug resistant strain of tuberculosis has been confirmed in Middlesex County.
LONDON - A rare case of tuberculosis has startled physicians in London after it was discovered as drug resistant. Nearly 60 others will have to be tested who have come into contact with the infected patient. Program Supervisor and Health Protection at Oxford County Public Health Elaine Reddick wishes to reassure that Oxford County has a great track record to combat tuberculosis. "We have very low rates of active TB in Oxford, we had 3 cases last year, 1 case so far this year and that's after several years of not having any cases, and none of our cases have been drug resistant."
Although it hasn't spread to the county Reddick fears that a case such as this could invade our area."It could show up anywhere because it is in different countries around the world. Anybody who test positive for TB automatically the specimen is tested for drug resistance, and is done for every case. We are always on the lookout for that and anybody will be tested for drug resistance if they have TB."
Reddick explains the most common symptoms that you will experience once infected. "A cough is definitely a symptom of TB, losing weight, and general not feeling well. It is not necessarily very specific but if someone has a cough that is not going away physicians need to think about TB and test them particularly if they have any risk factors." It is highly recommended to contact your family doctor immediately if you suspect that you have tuberculosis
