AJ Baker families head to London to fight against the closure of Lorne Ave. school
Education not consolidation.
That's the message two school groups are taking to the Thames Valley District School Board tonight.
Before the board meets in London at 7PM, the AJ Baker School Community from Kintore will join in a rally supporting Lorne Ave. school in London.
Lorne Ave. families are fighting to keep the school open, as it is imminently on the chopping block.
Marcus Ryan with the ARC Committee for AJ Baker says after going through 30 accommodation reviews, it doesn't make sense to keep closing schools. "Really no matter what way you look at this; if you're a concerned parent, this isn't giving you what you want for your kid. If you're a concerned taxpayer, this isn't giving you more efficient use of taxes. It's not doing anything for communities that's for sure. So nobody is winning through this, so why should the board keep doing it?"
They argue since Thames Valley started closing schools in 2006, EQAO scores have fallen and the Board's budget has risen 30%.
Trustees can expect to encounter a few hundred concerned parents and students prior to tonight's meeting. Ryan says, "It's kind of their (Lorne Ave.) show, and we're there in support of them. They're hoping for several hundred people and they've done that before. So I would expect between their group, and our group, we'll get a lot."
