Bonita Purtill said she was afraid for her life as she got into her truck to get away from her boyfriend Bob Colwell. But Crown Attorney Steve Guiler asked her why then would she roll down her window to ask him for her cell phone back? She said, she only rolled it down a crack and felt assured that she was safer with the glass between them. After he threatened to get the spare set of keys she said she took off. Guiler also asked her why she would have called Colwell the next day to pick her up and take her to her lawyer, after being so afraid of him the night before. She only replied, "I couldn't drive and I needed someone to take me there." Guiler went through the multiple witnesses that said they smelled alcohol coming from Purtill that night. When questioned about that evidence she said it might have been the one mixed drink she had around 6:15pm. Guiler found it hard to believe that a margarita mix with four ounces of alcohol in it could smell that strongly. Guiler asked her about all of her other symptoms of impairment like swaying, stumbling, and slurring her speech to which she said could have been due to the loud noises, many people questioning her, and the crash impact itself. Guiler concluded, "Maybe your not telling me how truly intoxicated you were." Paramedic Matt Daltrey was the last witness to testify. He drove an ambulance to the scene of the crash on the night in question. Daltrey asked if he could speak to Purtill as she was in the back of the police cruiser when he arrived. He had to poke her before she answered if she was OK or not. He said he did not smell anything at all as he asked her three different questions. He was four feet away from her and noticed she delayed her answers. His head was always outside the vehicle. He said normally people are upset, but Purtill showed no sign of emotion. Closing arguments will be heard Thursday morning at 10am with the Defence up first. The jury could have this trial in their hands as early as Friday morning.
