Tree lighting helps draw attention to the issue of violence against women

Purple lights now shine on the trees out front of Woodstock Police Headquarters.

But they're not Christmas lights.

Kirsten Stevenson of Survivor Voices Oxford explains.  "We're shining the light on awareness of violence against women.  So essentially we're doing what we can to help end women abuse.  So when people are driving by, their attention will be drawn to the purple lights, and hopefully the signs and bring awareness to this issue."

The lights were lit for the first time last night in a brief ceremony in front of Police Headquarters.

Stevenson explains why Woodstock Police HQ is the right location.  "I think it's important for women out there who are being abused to know that the police is in full support of them, and will do whatever they can to support them.  I know it's very difficult for some women to speak up and step out.  A lot of people before maybe wouldn't have gone to the police, but they know now that they can."

The tree lighting is part of the "Zonta Says No" 16-days of activism campaign.

Zonta Club of Woodstock President Brenda Currah tells Heart FM, "We hope that the outcome will be that people are more aware of the problems we have around here with domestic violence."
