Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced plans to introduce back-to-work legislation yesterday after CUPE gave the required five days' strike notice.
ONTARIO - The Ford Government is getting ready to announce back-to-work legislation for the province's education workers.
About 55,000 custodians, early childhood educators, and administration staff with the Canadian Union of Public Employees will be in a legal strike position on Thursday.
CUPE gave the required five days' notice yesterday, and Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced pending back-to-work legislation afterward. He said it's in response to the union's refusal to withdraw their intent to strike. Lecce's press conference is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. today.
At least three school boards have announced that they will shut down schools if education workers hit the picket lines. This includes The Toronto Catholic District School Board, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, and the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic School Board
The union is looking for annual pay raises of 11.7 percent to keep up with inflation. It says the Ford Government has offered yearly raises of two percent for employees making less than $40,000 a year and a 1.25 percent raise for other employees.
